Police officers must treat you humanely and you are less likely to be hurt or injured the more cooperative you are. They may search your vehicle, your clothing and you. They will pat you down before putting you into the backseat of the police car to make sure you have no weapons, needles or anything else that could harm them and to ensure their safety and yours.
3. Miranda Rights
These are read to you before a police officer can legally question your involvement in a crime. You have the following rights:
• to be informed of the charges against you
• to remain silent
• to hire an attorney or have one appointed if you cannot afford one
• to have a judge determine if you should stay in jail or be released until your court date
4. Notifying Family or Friends
You have the right to let someone know where you are and that you have been arrested. Make sure you request that they inform your family member or friend of your arrest so they can start locating bail bondsman and making arrangements to get you out, especially helpful is what jail you are taken to.
You will then be handcuffed and transported to jail.
In addition, never argue with police officers arresting you and certainly don't every try to run or escape. Keep your hands in view at all times and don't touch any of the officers. Don't be belligerent by threatening or yelling at the officers, this will just get you in more trouble.
